Vertigo/Dizziness Treatment

BPPV is an abbreviation for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

What it essentially means is that you experience short bouts of dizziness if you put your head in certain positions.

The common positions that provoke the dizziness:

  • Rolling over in bed
  • Lying down in bed
  • Bending over
  • Tilting your head back
What actually happens?

Structures within the middle ear are responsible for your sense of balance. Motion sensors that resemble fine hairs sway according to your head position. These "hairs" can be knocked over by loosened debris/"crystals" in the middle ear. As a result, the brain has misinformation about your head position, resulting in dizziness.

What symptoms are common?
  • Head spinning that lasts for less than one minute
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Light headedness
  • Eye tiredness
What causes BPPV?
  • Infection
  • A fall
  • Head injury
  • Ageing
How is it treated?

A number of treatment options are available and may include:

  • Eye exercises
  • Balance exercises
  • Physiotherapy manoeuvres to relocate the "crystals" and return the motion sensors to their upright position
How often will I need treatment?

The duration of the treatment program varies between individuals. Generally patients need between 3 - 9 appointments. The expectation is that your dizziness will resolve within this time frame.

The clinic is open from 8am till late Monday to Friday and 8am till 12pm on Saturdays and bookings can be made through our friendly reception team on (07) 5539 4484.
